Plan Vivo Standard

Taking Root’s Limay Community Carbon Project is a registered Plan Vivo Project and follows the Plan Vivo Standard, the only carbon standard developed exclusively for use in community-based projects. This standard was developed and is overseen by the Plan Vivo Foundation.

This standard is part of a larger Plan Vivo System, which is a framework for developing and managing community-based land-use projects with long-term carbon, livelihood and ecosystem benefits.

Plan Vivo makes the international carbon market accessible to small farmers and focuses on strengthening local capacity, diversifying and increasing earnings for participants and restoration of ecosystems.

Participants in Plan Vivo projects are rural smallholder farmers and communities dependent on natural resources for livelihoods. Activities are implemented on smallholder or community land.

Why purchase Plan Vivo Carbon Offset Certificates?

Beyond representing the long-term absorption or reduction of one tonne of CO2e, Plan Vivo Certificates also offer the following local ecosystem and livelihood benefits:

  • Poverty reduction and livelihood development through sustainable agriculture and micro-enterprises
  • Restoration of degraded ecosystems and re-introducing native species
  • Adaptation of natural and managed ecosystems to climate change (watershed protection, soil stabilization, regulation of micro-climates)
  • Biodiversity conservation through strengthening protected areas
