Our carbon offsets
|
Taking Root provides a concrete way for businesses and individuals to manage their carbon footprints while helping to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in developing countries through social reforestation.
Taking Root’s carbon offsets are generated through the Limay Community Carbon Project, a social reforestation project developed in collaboration with smallholder farming families in Nicaragua. These famers work to reforest underutilized portions of their land and maintain these trees. In exchange they receive payments for the ecosystem services that these trees provide, such as absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2). Trees are natural carbon sinks; they capture CO2 and store it in their plant tissue in the form of various carbon molecules. Closer to the equator, trees can grow up to 10 times faster than in northern climates, making tropical reforestation an affordable and efficient step in the fight against climate change. Our social reforestation carbon offsets are certified under the Plan Vivo Standard, a framework for developing and managing community-based land-use projects with long-term carbon, livelihood and ecosystem benefits. PromotionBusiness owners can also take advantage of our CO2 Responsible promotional kit, a set of personalized marketing tools to help promote your carbon offsetting and connect with carbon-conscious customers. The kit includes a personalized CO2 Responsible microsite, promotional material including shelf talkers and stickers, and the use of the CO2 Responsible emblem in all of their communications material.
