Founded in 2007, Taking Root is a non-profit organization based in Montreal, Canada, that develops social reforestation projects in Nicaragua and sells verified carbon offsets to like-minded individuals and businesses worldwide, helping them to manage their carbon footprints.

To ensure the success of our projects, Taking Root brings into consideration and addresses the bigger picture around deforestation and climate change. For this reason, we have developed the following statements.
On climate change
Tackling climate change is a multi-faceted and crucial task. Taking Root believes:
- Climate change is a global issue that must be addressed. As citizen of developed countries, we are the chief emitters of greenhouse gases, making it our duty to address this problem.
- Carbon offsetting is an efficient and affordable means of compensating for unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions.
- Offsetting is only one part of the bigger picture of sustainable development and so, in conjunction, we encourage businesses and individuals alike to further reduce their carbon footprint and environmental impact on local communities.
On reforestation
A successful reforestation project involves more than simply planting trees. Taking Root believes:
- It must address the processes that lead to deforestation and forest degradation: food production, pastureland, timber and fuelwood needs.
- It must acknowledge local communities’ dependence on forest resources.
- It must ensure local communities’ involvement in the project planning and implementation.
